German speakers avoid repeating whole phrases by using Pronominaladverbien (da-compounds): Ich interessiere mich für Fußball becomes Ich interessiere mich dafür — no need to say "for it" as two words. At B2 level you are expected to use them naturally in both speech and writing. This exercise trains the most common ones.
Short answer: a Pronominaladverb replaces preposition + it/this for things and ideas. Build it with da- + preposition: damit (with it), dafür (for it), darauf (on it), darüber (about it). For questions use wo-: womit, wofür, worüber.
How da-compounds are formed
Take the verb's fixed preposition and add da- (statement) or wo- (question):
| Verb + preposition | Statement (da-) | Question (wo-) |
|---|---|---|
| sich interessieren für | dafür | wofür |
| warten auf | darauf | worauf |
| sprechen über | darüber | worüber |
| träumen von | davon | wovon |
| sich freuen auf | darauf | worauf |
| mit | damit | womit |
Rule for -r-: when the preposition begins with a vowel (an, auf, aus, in, über, um, unter), insert an -r-: da + auf = darauf, wo + über = worüber.
Important: only for things, not people
Da-compounds refer to things, ideas, statements and situations. For people, use a personal pronoun or the preposition + question word:
- Thing: Ich spreche darüber. (about it)
- Person: Ich spreche mit ihm. (with him) — never damit for a person
- Question (thing): Worüber sprichst du?
- Question (person): Mit wem sprichst du?
Pronominaladverbien build directly on verbs with fixed prepositions from B1 — if you know the preposition, you can build the compound.

Pronominaladverbien at B2: what to focus on
- Learn verb + preposition together: the compound is just da/wo + that preposition.
- Apply the -r- rule: da/wo + an, auf, aus, in, über, um, unter → daran, darauf, darüber...
- Never use them for people: mit ihm, für sie, über euch — da-compounds are for things.
- Use them to avoid repetition: they make your German sound natural and compact.
- Combining with dass-clauses: Ich freue mich darauf, dass du kommst — a very common B2 structure.

Frequently asked questions
What is a Pronominaladverb (da-compound)?
A Pronominaladverb replaces preposition + (es/this) when referring to a thing or an idea. Form it with da- + preposition: damit (with it/this), dafür (for it), darauf (on it), darüber (about it), davon (of it). Example: Ich interessiere mich für Fußball → Ich interessiere mich dafür.
When do I use wo-compounds like worüber?
Use wo- + preposition for questions about things: worüber (about what), womit (with what), wofür (for what), worauf (on what). When the preposition starts with a vowel, insert an -r-: wo + über = worüber, wo + auf = worauf.
Can I use da-compounds for people?
No. For people, use a personal pronoun: Ich spreche mit ihm (not damit). Da-compounds only refer to things, ideas, statements or situations. To ask about people use preposition + question word: Mit wem sprichst du?
How do I know which preposition to use?
The verb decides the preposition, exactly as in verbs with fixed prepositions. Each verb locks onto its preposition — sich interessieren für → dafür, warten auf → darauf, träumen von → davon, sich freuen auf → darauf. The da-compound is simply da + that preposition.
